Citizens Advice Q&A Issue 4

Q1

My passport expires in January 2023 and I’ve booked a trip to Paris just before Christmas.  My friend mentioned that I need to have at least 3 months on my passport for it to be valid.  Is this correct?

A1

Your friend is correct…. As you are travelling to the EU your passport must have more than 3 months left when you travel. Your passport must also have been issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country. It sounds as though you will need to renew your passport in order to fly. More information on passport renewal can be found at the following link: https://www.gov.uk/renew-adult-passport/renew

Q2

My father died last week and I’m dealing with his funeral arrangements.  The thought of notifying everyone is overwhelming and I don’t know where to start.  Is there an easy way to do this?

A2

Dealing with a death is overwhelming and difficult.  We would suggest using the government’s ‘Tell Us Once’ service.  This allows you to make a single report which will update local and central government departments.  This includes Social Security Scotland, HMRC, DWP, the Passport Office, DVLA, Local Council, Veterans UK and some public sector Pension Schemes. A registrar should explain the Tell Us Once service to you when you register a death. For more information you can visit https://www.mygov.scot/tell-us-once
